Many pundits have cited commodity pricing and declining revenues as signs that the hardware business is dying, yet Lenovo seems to be doubling down. I'll explore what's behind Lenovo's strategy, and what it means for IT leaders.

The deal ends Google's run as a handset maker after it biggest-ever takeover, which was announced in 2011 and finalized in 2012.Even under Google, Motorola failed to gain traction in a rapidly evolving lenovo a60+ phone smartphone market now dominated by South Korea's Samsung and US-based Apple.

"This move will enable Google to devote our energy to driving innovation across the Android ecosystem, for the benefit of smartphone users everywhere."Figures released by Strategy Analytics showed Google's Android system was used on 78.9 percent of smartphones sold globally in 2013.

In last year's fourth quarter, storage accounted for 22 per cent of total revenue for IBM's systems and technology business segment. The share of servers was 69 per cent, while that of microelectronics manufacturing was 9 per cent.

In IBM's earnings call with analysts on January 21, chief financial officer Martin Schroeter said profit in the company's systems and technology business segment fell by about US$1.7 billion last year.

A report by IDC showed Lenovo was the fifth-largest smartphone maker in the fourth quarter with a 4.5 percent market share, barely behind fellow Chinese maker Huawei and South Korea's LG.Llamas said that with Motorola added in, Lenovo will be number three globally and gain other benefits.

Google and Lenovo claimed the deal was good everyone involved."Lenovo has the expertise and track record to scale Motorola Mobility into a major player within the Android ecosystem," Google chief executive Larry Page said in a statement.

Lenovo is not the first company to attempt to offer hardware that covers all aspects of a mobile computing environment, including smartphones and tablets, traditional PCs, and the servers that power them -- and recent newsmaker Dell seems to be an obvious point of comparison. Unlike Dell, Lenovo is a "native" Chinese company, and the Chinese market will likely drive mobile device sales in the coming years. While PC and laptop sales remain stagnant, the Chinese market is beginning to rapidly adopt lenovo a369 smartphones and tablets.
